Fascinating times, Reader,
Last Thursday’s HBEC Networking Breakfast was given over entirely to the subject of the future of the HBEC.
Mr John Davies, President of the Board of Port Macquarie Community College explained to the assembly a little of the history of HBEC, and especially the College’s role in providing the BEC a lifeline about 4 years ago, when government funding was withdrawn. There is no question that without the support of PM Community College, Hastings BEC would have gone the way of many others, and ceased operations at that time.
Four years on, HBEC is strong and growing steadily – with the College’s support. The College Board has decided – quite correctly in my opinion – that the BEC is not core business for the future of the College, and the time has come to find a new home for HBEC. The Board has invited expressions of interest from organizations capable of providing ongoing support for the HBEC. The opportunity to lodge expressions of interest closes this week, and assessments by the College Board will follow.
At last Thursday’s breakfast, a number of members expressed a strong desire to participate in determining the future of the HBEC. John expressed his view that the decision was ultimately one for the College Board.
Members present expressed a strong desire for the HBEC to continue its current functions. Several mentioned the possibility of the HBEC incorporating in some form as a free-standing entity. The viability of such a move would require close analysis. The EOI criterion is that the HBEC will continue in its present form. Wherever the HBEC continues, it will be up to the new owners to make their assessment of the HBEC objectives and operations and for members to actively involve themselves with support and feedback during this process.
My own contract position as HBEC Coordinator will terminate effective 19 December. I welcome the opportunity for the HBEC to review its governance and operational model. I will provide whatever interim support I am able, and prepare the administration of HBEC for transfer pending further developments. Discussions will continue, and I will keep members and associates of HBEC informed, both directly (for Members) and through this newsletter.
Now, on with this week’s notices:

Key Business Development Program
Council is currently preparing for next year’s intake into the Key Business Development Program. The group is kept small - about 15 businesses. 'Export' (that is, export out of this region) type businesses are considered to be an important contributor to this area's future economic prospects and, accordingly Council heavily subsidises the cost of participation so as to provide every opportunity for our best businesses to participate. Thanks to Susie Boswell – Port P.R. – for another bit of good news about a HBEC Member:
The Observatory resort hotel Port Macquarie has been placed second overall, highly commended, in Australia-wide awards for hospitality excellence, pipped for the top honour only by a prominent Sydney restaurant.
Judging was by on-site audits carried out by the Customer Service Institute of Australia. This is a terrific accolade for a regional business employing a small staff in comparison to some of the national giants, including Virgin Blue, who were also acknowledged.
It also fits with PMHC's Economic Development division's strategy to make Port a notable centre of customer service best practice.
The Observatory's directors Chris Denny, also president of Greater Port Macquarie Tourism, Trish Denny and Margaret Chant attended the awards presentation in Melbourne.

Hastings Cancer Trust Golf Day
Yes, it’s that time of year again, when charity golf days ensure the physical well-being of Hastings business people. Nothing like a leisurely stroll around a long paddock, occasionally taking a casual swipe at a dimpled spere to get the creative juices flowing for the rest of the work week.
If you can do a worthy charity a bit of good at the same time, well that has to be a good thing.
This time the charity is particularly worthy – Hastings Cancer Trust. The event will be held at Emerald Downs Golf Course on Saturday 22nd November 2008. (Saturday, so you don’t even need a “sickie” to take part)
Competition will be a 9-hole 4 person Ambrose, with loads of prizes including 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings, nearest the pin, straightest drive (the trip home doesn’t count) and a putting competition. All proceeds benefit cancer patients in the Hastings/Macleay Region.
It’s a good cause, so contact Emerald Downs Golf Clubhouse to register. Ph: 6582 6120 or fax 6582 2213, or call Betty on 0427 846 947.

W A R N I N G
Yet another insidious set of emails is circulating, with damaging payloads.
If you receive an email like the following message, with an attachment, DO NOT OPEN the attachment.
“Good day
We have already made ready the contract and we also joined some points you’d asked to add to it.
The lawyers change some points on the last page. Read the contract, please, and if there are no objections from your part we can pay for the first batch on Friday.
You can find the contract in the attached ZIP Archive. (Password is: contract)
We also ready to send it by fax if you need Expecting for your decision”
Many variations of this format are circulating. DON’T EVER OPEN ONE. If you don’t know who an email is from, delete it and its attachment. In the unlikely event that it was genuine, the sender will contact you another way.
This one, by the way, was from MSU Ltd. And titled “Lease Contract”
The appalling English is a hint, but you can’t afford to be trusting on the Internet. (And don’t forget, Email is the Wild West!)
Be careful!

Staying Up To Date With Technology
The following is a short extract from an entertaining email newsletter to which I subscribe:
“Right at the end of our forum, as we were running out of time, the panel was asked what IT-related advice we would have for the Australian Government.
Ditching the "Clean Feed" censorship project was the #1 item mentioned, of course.
My suggestion was that the government should kill off the remaining technology commercialisation grants that are still hanging around because all they do is provide a good soundbite ("State Government commits $120M to the local ICT industry!") right before an election, but then most of the funds are soaked up within the bureaucracy and paying "consultants" and very little of it gets into the hands of the innovators who could use it to, you know, actually build the local ICT industry.
Instead it would be better to look at successful schemes overseas in places like Canada, where a percentage of superannuation funds are invested into start-up ventures which are also provided with advice and assistance to get themselves ready for investment. Most ICT-related government initiatives at the moment are about helping us be technology consumers rather than technology producers, which is not a good long-term strategy if we still want to call ourselves "the clever country".”

Lessons about Leadership, from Beth Flynn at Ohio State University:
• Leaders need to remember the importance of interdependence – that life is not just about the business; an organization is a community of human beings.
• Leaders need to care about interpersonal relationships and be willing to be cared about.
• A leader doesn’t have to be superhuman or have all the answers, no matter how much people may wish it to be so.
• Failing is only a step on the path to success.
• Trouble doesn’t last forever.
• Know what you stand for as a leader before crisis hits; when things are crashing down around you and people are looking for your leadership, it’s too late to figure things out.
• Integrity is the only thing you have that is truly yours (Thomas, 2008, p. 30).

Ironed-out greetings, Reader,
The day after Scody Half Ironman is a time when the body reveals its true age. Bones and muscles ache – and I was just working on an Aid Station! Again, the Scody Half Ironman was a highly successful event for Port Macquarie, drawing a large number of people into the region and providing invaluable promotion and marketing across a very wide spectrum of media.
The weather could have been a bit kinder, doing as it did “a Melbourne”, with four seasons per hour. But overall the event was a great success. Congratulations to the organisers, sponsors, volunteers and, especially, all the athletes.
Last week all financial members of Hastings BEC were sent a letter from the President of the Board of our governing body – Port Macquarie Community College. In the letter, John Davies explains that the College Board has reviewed the place of the HBEC in the context of a business unit of the College. The Board has decided that the HBEC does not represent core business for the future direction of the College, and that relationship will be terminated with effect 31 December 2008.
The Board has sought expressions of interest from organisations and parties that may wish to take over the operations of the HBEC for the long term, in the hope that the HBEC may be transferred as a going concern.
A classic truism recalls that “with change comes opportunity”. I hope existing members will provide support and show perseverance through this period of change, that additional readers of this email will choose to take up HBEC membership, and that we will emerge with an even stronger and more responsive business organisation.
At our HBEC Breakfast this Thursday, 13th November at Panthers, John will speak on the College's decision on the HBEC.
RSVP for this Thursday’s BEC Breakfast – 6.45am for 7.00am at Panthers Pier One Restaurant, Port Macquarie.

Cheers,
03 Nov 2008
Refreshingly dampened greetings, Reader,
Into every life a little rain must fall. Fortunately, for the good people of Port Macquarie, the rain held off yesterday for the Holiday Coast Credit Union Tastings Of The Hastings. And what a fantastic event it was!
A highlight, for me, was The Other Chef – Eric Robinson, demonstrating the preparation of kingfish sachimi. Starting with a whole kingfish, Eric expertly filleted the fish, then shaved paper-thin slices of the succulent flesh to marinade and finally presented with a garnish of Japanese herbs. Just stunning! Even the senior lady sitting next to me, who was unused to the idea of eating “raw fish”, was enthused by the end result.
2008’s Tastings was even bigger, better and more popular than last year’s highly successful event. This year featured more stalls, a wider variety of goods and services on show, and oh, the food! I think every restaurant in the region was represented. An estimated 5,000 plus people attended, including the NSW Minister for Regional Development, Philip Costa, and all shared in a great morning. As well as the usual Tastings taskforce, led by Trevor Sargeant, this year Sonia Fingleton took the lead in coordinating the event, and the result is a credit to her leadership and the hard work of a dedicated team.
Tastings, at the race course, was the culmination of a week of events highlighting the Journey of Flavour, a new promotion tying together producers and outlets for the regions wonderful food, wine and beverage products. A great product of the Journey of Flavour program is a cookbook featuring dishes by many of the region’s best restaurateurs and chefs. The HCCU Tastings of the Hastings Cookbook can be purchased from Council Reception (Port, Wauchope & Laurieton), the VICs (Port & Kew) or from the Economic Development team at Port HQ. At only $10 a copy, it makes a great little easily-mailed gift for friends.
Success of the Tastings was the culmination of a good week, and a satisfying year for principal sponsor, our Patron Member Holiday Coast Credit Union. Well done to CEO Neville Parsons and the whole HCCU team. Recent announcement of a successful trading result for the year, even in very difficult conditions, followed closely the launch of HCCU’s refreshed logo and image. The new logo, see above (in the header block) is modern and stylish. (See story below)
This week is a propitious time to announce our two newest members. Welcome to Nicole Graham’s Emergency ID Australia, and Brigid Loane representing Silverspoon Catering & Events. Great to have these two excellent local businesses join us in the HBEC.
We still need to increase our HBEC membership a little, to achieve ongoing viability. And, of course, expanded membership means greater opportunity for contacts and networking for existing members as well. So, if you have contact with a business that is not currently a HBEC member and should be, please invite them to join us. Right now, new members can enjoy 14 months of membership for the cost of 12, as new memberships will remain valid right through 2009.
On a completely different tack, is it just me, or do others see an increasing similarity between the Obama campaign and that of JFK? Just an idle observation! Tomorrow will tell. Which is easier to pick, the Cup or the Presidency?
This is a big week for announcements and promotions, so let’s get started…

Holiday Coast Credit Union’s new logo retains some of Holiday Coast Credit Union’s history, while at the same time welcoming our new direction. The new logo is contemporary, bold and instantly recognisable and incorporates an iconic feel that in time will be recognised as Holiday Coast Credit Union. The colours used within the old logo reflected the sea, sand and hinterland. These iconic Australian coastal hues provide strong imagery and as such are easily recognisable. These hues are also an integral part of Holiday Coast Credit Union's heritage and as such were retained and reinforced to make them stronger - more of a focal point.
The colours blue, green and yellow have been turned into a symbol of strength. For some they will appear like a circle, a symbol of unity. Others will see the symbol as a sculpture, a piece of art that represents the past the present and the future of the Holiday Coast Credit Union.

I happen to have a gift voucher entitling a team of four players to enter, with the compliments of Emerald Downs Golf Course Management. I’ll think of a devious way for you to win, and let you know next week. In the meantime, register and if you win, your fees will be refunded.

On the other hand, if you would like a good excuse to spend a Friday afternoon out in the open air…
Mid North Coast Chapter of FPA are holding a Charity Golf Day at Wauchope, on Friday 5th December.
This event, sponsored by the FPA and radio station 2MC FM, will benefit Hastings Rural Fire Service, North Coast Surf Lifesaving, and Future 2 Foundation.
An 18 hole 4 person Ambrose event, with loads of prizes and fun along the way. Registration and BBQ at 11.00am followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon.
Held at Wauchope Country Club, King St Wauchope. A registration form can be downloaded from www.hastingsbec.com.au/downloads/FPAInvitation2008.doc

Robert de Lepervanche, from COMPASS financial management, provided an article a couple of weeks ago that was well received by Update readers. I’m grateful to Rob for providing another informed observation on the current economic situation:
“The last ten days has been awash with announcements about Mortgage/Income Funds being placed in a freeze, largely due to the reaction from the Government guarantee on bank held deposits etc. In these somewhat uncharted waters people have grabbed the notion of this guarantee and flocked to the additional security offered by the Government guarantee. Unfortunately an unwanted consequence of this has been the rush of withdrawals from these Mortgage/Income Funds and as with any institution if everyone wants their money back they don’t just have it sitting in a suitcase waiting to be handed over.
Also, somewhat unfortunately, the term Mortgage/Income Fund has been used to cover a range of Funds with a varying degree of financial strength. By far the majority of the Institutions that have made announcements over the last 10 days are conservatively run, well managed businesses that are able to continue paying regular income, are not highly geared and have no relationship to, or with, the associated problems that have been seen with those other Funds that have on-lent money for property development. As such if these Funds were forced to wind up they would be able to meet all investor redemptions…………the point being they can’t just do it overnight. This is the same way that one of the big four banks would not be able to supply all investors with their money back straight away if everyone asked for it.
It is a pity the media chooses to portray these Funds in the same light as some of those which did go belly up earlier in the year and will not be able to return all funds to investors………..….even if given time. If you are unsure whether you have money tied up in this sector ask your Financial Planner…….if you don’t have one, get one.”
Note: The above should be considered as a general comment only and not personal advice.

And this week’s offering of wisdom from Beth Flynn at OSU.
Benefits of a System of Behavioral Standards
Does your business have a stated system of behavioral standards? There are real benefits, including:
1. Preferred behavior is pinpointed.
2. Accountability is established.
3. Trust is engendered.
4. The conceptual is linked to daily life.
5. Legal risks are reduced.
6. Awareness and expectations are heightened.
7. Inquiries are stimulated.
8. Ethical decision making is enhanced.
9. Standards serve as a yardstick for ethical performance (Kerns, 2005, p.150-151).
From: Kerns, C. (2005). Value-centered ethics: a proactive system to shape ethical behavior. Amherst, MA: HRD Press.
And there we go, another lap completed on life’s mad merry-go-round.
Finally, a couple of links to the statistics that keep us going…

27 Oct 2008
Monday greetings, Reader,
What an interesting time in which we are living. I am particularly intrigued by the current difference of opinion between the two huge economic blocs – on one side the combined might of Europe and Asia, and on the other the USA – about the panacea for our global economic ills. The E/A bloc appear to be supporting a slightly socialist line, while GB’s USA is pushing for more of the same, unrestrained free market. Isn’t that where the trouble started???
I’m feeling a little better, at a personal level. For a while there, I thought I was all alone in not understanding the behaviour of the markets. But I’m becoming convinced that no one understands it, and perhaps the behaviour defies rational understanding. The most difficult thing to find is solid unemotional analysis of the day to day situation, without the headline-grabbing (or headline-creating) hysteria. I was grateful for Rob de Lepervanche’s contribution last Monday, and I look forward to including another contribution from the team at COMPASS financial management in due course.
On Friday morning, 31st October, Peak Partners will provide a free breakfast seminar entitled “Enjoy it – Succession Planning” at Rydges Port Macquarie. This seminar will address the very important issue of business continuation and the transition for business owners into retirement while caring for the ongoing viability of their business. See the item below for a last opportunity to join in.
Response so far to this seminar has been a bit disappointing. This is a topic of critical interest to all business owners – particularly those approaching retirement age. Don’t miss out. See the item below for registration details.
Rydges is a popular venue at the moment. Last Friday night the second annual Six Degrees of Degustation Dinner was held in the stunningly situated Bayside Room. About 100 local business people enjoyed the sensational creations of six of our most accomplished local chefs. Dishes were designed to highlight the best of our local produce, and were accompanied by a selection of wonderful local wines. (Yes the repeated use of the word local is intentional) May I offer a paean to Kate Wood-Foye and “other half” Steve Foye for hosting a splendid event to open Tastings Of The Hastings Week. Congrats also to the staff at Rydges who did a great job servicing a large special event. I hope all the Tastings events to follow will be equally successful.
See the item below for upcoming events including the main event, Tastings of the Hastings at Port Macquarie Racecourse on Sunday 2nd November.
At a time when economics is looming in our day to day lives, we should be taking a second look at the wonderful variety of fresh produce and manufactured products available within our home region. The environmental and economic savings from “eating local” are tangible.
Finally, last Tuesday evening’s Customer Care Mix & Mingle Night was a huge success. The biggest CCM&M attendance to date celebrated the announcement of Douglas Vale Vineyard as the 200th Member of the Customer Care program. Long-time member (and HBEC Member) Karen Woodham, with her business Migrate Now won the main prize on the night, a full-page interview in Focus magazine, to be included in the November issue.
It’s pleasing to see a real energy and momentum building in the Customer Care program, and similarly with the new Journey of Flavour campaign. Great initiatives!

From: Riffenbary, J. (2007). No excuse! incorporating core values, accountability, and balance into our life and career. Possibility Press.
If there were ever a time to dare to make a difference, to do something really worth doing, that time is now. Not for any grand cause, necessarily, but for something that tugs at your heart, something that’s your aspiration, something that’s your dream. You owe it to yourself to make your days here count. Have fun. Dig deep. Stretch. Dream big.
Know that things worth doing seldom come easily. There will be good days. And there probably will be bad days. There will be times when you want to turn around, pack it up, and call it quits. Those times come only to tell you that you are pushing yourself, and that you are not afraid to learn and grow. Persist.
Because with an idea, determination, and the right tools, you can do great things. Let your instincts, your intellect, and your heart guide you. Trust.
Believe in the incredible power of the human mind, in the power of doing things that really make a difference, of working hard, of laughing and hoping, of reaching out, of saying ‘I love you,’ of lasting friends, of all things that will cross your path this year. The start of something new rings hope of something great. Anything is possible. There is only one you. And you will pass this particular way only once. Live your dream! Make a difference

20 October 2008
Warm Spring greetings, Reader,
The people of Port Macquarie have spoken. Peter Besseling is our new Member in State Parliament, and congratulations to Peter for his win.
The BEC refrained from endorsing any individual candidate for this election. On behalf of BEC members I simply expressed the desire that the successful candidate should be someone who has the determination, skills and experience to stand up for the interests of this community in the jungle of NSW politics. We’ve elected a nice bloke, a good sportsman and recreation club executive. Whether he will prove to be up to the task for our community remains to be seen.
With no local (elected) government, a council staff bleeding experienced senior managers, and neophyte representatives at both NSW and Federal level, one can’t help but feel just a little exposed as a community. Doubly so when you consider the fiscal and moral bankruptcy of the incumbent NSW Government.
Perhaps now, more than ever, is the time for the business and senior community networks to try to take up the slack by focusing on the future direction of our towns and region. Some pretty major decisions are pending, not the least of which is the master plan for redevelopment of our waterfront – all the way from north of Quality Sails Resort to Lighthouse Beach. As business operators, highly dependent upon the strength of tourism, this development more than most should be getting our full attention. Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce has, to their credit, been proactive in pushing the foreshore issue.
I hope that, as a business community, we can learn to exert more influence to shape the development of our region for the benefit of our residents and visitors – not to suit the financial imperatives of individual developers or a Sydney-centric planning minister.
On a brighter note, our BEC member The Observatory has done it again. Yet another award, with the announcement of The Observatory as co-winner of the Customer Service Institute of Australia’s NSW Service Excellence Award for hospitality. Now the Observatory team go on to the national awards in Melbourne. I wish them luck, but I know that Trish, Margaret and Chris, and their terrific team, get there not by luck but by great business operation.
On the subject of award winners, Economic Development Australia has recognised the work of our Council’s Economic Development Team of Trevor Sargeant, Rachel Ross, Wendy Beverley and Wayne Graham, with its Award for Excellence in Regional Development. This is timely recognition of the fantastic job done by this team in implementing and growing a number of regional initiatives. Included among these are the strongly growing Customer Care Program, Tastings of the Hastings and the associated recent development the Journey of Flavour, and of course ongoing support for regional producers through the Farmers Markets. On a more academic level, the team also drives a vision and program for fostering entrepreneurship and building business networks within and beyond our region.
From time to time, a lot of mud is thrown at our Council, so it’s good to have the opportunity to recognise a high performing team. And keep an eye on Wayne Graham, from Trevor Sargeant’s team. This quietly spoken young man has a wealth of skills, experience and ability, and is already making a strong contribution to our community.
OK. On with this weeks goodies:

In these trying times, Robert de Lepervanche, from COMPASS financial management has provided the following informed and up to date observations on the financial scene. Thanks Rob.
A shortish article on things economic and financial.
Well the one thing that can be said about the markets last week was that they were, at least, better than the week before!!
That said, there was still extreme volatility with the US Dow Jones starting the week on Monday with a rise of 11.1%, only to be followed on Wednesday by a fall of 7.9%. Overall the Dow Jones finished the week up 4.7%. The reason for highlighting the US market is because that’s what’s dominating the world. The Australian market isn’t being driven by fundamentals, rather it’s just reacting to whatever happens on the other side of the world……and right now that really is anyone’s guess.
With some trepidation it appears the world share markets have moved on from the Credit Crisis that started all this mess and are now focusing on the severity of the recession in the US. With that in mind, the US reporting season gets into full swing over the next few weeks and this will dictate our markets for the foreseeable future.
Everyone agrees that the earnings will be ordinary, but that’s not the point……what will drive the markets will be the forecasts for 2009 and beyond…..hang on tight.
A positive for the Australian economy is the apparent easing of the ‘liquidity’ crisis. This is evidenced by both ANZ & NAB announcing a recent reduction in their standard variable home loan rates outside of the normal monthly RBA rate cycle. Both “Bank Bill” and “Bond” yield curves are dropping like stones, confirming the easing of liquidity, and the fact that they are now more reflective of a contracting economy. Prior to this position, these yields were showing tight liquidity. We’ve now just got to get banks to trust each other!
Markets are now forecasting the RBA cash rate to be further reduced by 0.50% in November and a further 0.50% by early 2009.

Half Ironman is here again…
The Scody Half Ironman will be held in Port Macquarie on Sunday 9th November this year. This event (and the full Ironman earlier each year) brings enormous benefits to our town in the form of tourism, promotion and revenue generation for local businesses.
I’m seeking helpers for the Home Street Aid Station. We provide food, drink and support to competitors during the run leg of the event – and enjoy ourselves a lot along the way.
People who’ve helped in previous events have had a great day (and yes, most do come back again) but we need more helpers.
It’s a lot of fun, and much appreciated by the athletes.
If you can spare a few hours to assist, please call Gregg on 0419 438 194 or by email to admin@hastingsbec.com.au
